AEC Commences Conversion of Isuzu Trucks to LNG in Western Australia

November 26, 2009 | Australia, Perth

Perth-based Advanced Engine Components Ltd (AEC) has received its first commercial order to convert Isuzu 295hp diesel powered trucks to liquefied natural gas (LNG). The order, for immediate conversion of three engines to LNG, is the first draw down of an initial ten LNG powered trucks required by Sands Fridge Lines Pty Ltd (Sands), also based in Perth, Western Australia. The Isuzu 295hp LNG trucks will form part of Sands urban and country delivery fleet.

Sands is one of Western Australia’s largest refrigerated distribution companies. They have a large fleet of vehicles for servicing a variety of client distribution needs throughout the State.

AEC had previously developed, commissioned, tested and sold Euro IV emission standard compressed natural gas (CNG) and LNG versions of the Isuzu 190, 220 and 255hp 7.8 litre engines. The first of the Isuzu 220hp vehicles, converted to CNG using the AEC natural gas vehicle system, has now completed some 195,000 kms in commercial service.

From 1 January 2008, all new heavy duty vehicles in Australia must comply with Euro IV emission standards. To comply, and with the assistance of an AusIndustry Commercial Plus Grant, AEC developed the Sitec 295hp, Euro IV, diesel engine to operate on LNG. This enables AEC to convert the Isuzu 295hp diesel powered trucks to LNG.

Sands commenced on-road testing of the first Isuzu LNG 295hp truck in June 2009. This vehicle has now completed more than 16,000 kilometres in commercial service. The vehicle complies with Euro IV emission standards, has efficient fuel consumption and meets the same performance criteria as the Isuzu diesel equivalent.

Isuzu has approximately 40% of Australia’s urban return-to-base truck market. The Isuzu 295hp vehicles, used for refuse collection, concrete delivery, urban delivery and general transport, represent approximately 17% of Australia’s total truck market.

Energy and environmental legislation, together with increased freight and transport costs, are key drivers for heavy duty engine vehicle operators, such as Sands, seeking viable, alternative fuel solutions.
