After its debut in the 2010 Scirocco R-Cup the 275 hp VW Scirocco GT 24 will again be fielded at the Race of Champions in 2011. The world’s best racers will meet with each other in the biomethane-powered coupé at the Düsseldorf Football Arena on 3 and 4 December. 2011 Formula One world champions Sebastian Vettel is back to do one better, have tasted defeat in 2010 at the hands of U.S. Motocross superstar Travis Pastrana. Pastrana took advantage of the Scirocco’s innovative push-to-pass button which delivers an additional 50 hp for a few seconds, to snatch victory.
The list of entrants reads like the international motorsport hall of fame. The new Volkswagen rally driver Sébastien Ogier, former Formula One world champions Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button, the eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen and the DTM champions Martin Tomczyk, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekström and others will compete with Vettel at the event.
The Scirocco R-Cup will be the only vehicle featuring an alternative drive concept at the Race of Champions. Using biomethane the car produces 80% less CO2 compared with conventional gasoline racing fuels.
“We’re proud that the organisers of the Race of Champions have again selected the Racing Scirocco as a race car. This shows the prestige which the Scirocco R-Cup enjoys worldwide as a one-make cup,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.
The Scirocco R-Cup will enter its third season in 2012.
