As part of its commitment to help customers minimize carbon footprints and reduce California’s dependency on foreign fossil fuels, Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling stations provided the equivalent of three million gallons of gasoline to thousands of Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) customers in 2014. The use of these vehicles resulted in a reduction of carbon emissions equal to removing 1,500 gasoline fueled vehicles from the road.
Across 70,000 square-miles in Northern and Central California, PG&E owns and operates 24 publicly-accessible CNG vehicle fueling stations, which run very much like a conventional gasoline fueling station. These stations provide fuel to more than 16 thousand vehicles: 2,000 buses and garbage trucks, 7,600 vans and work trucks, and 6,400 passenger vehicles.
“Natural gas is the cleanest burning transportation fossil fuel available today that can economically power light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles,” said Nick Stavropoulos, executive vice president, Gas Operations. “Natural gas is a proven fuel that can improve local air quality and reduce greenhouse emissions. The company’s NGV customer base is diverse—CNG vehicles served by PG&E include passenger cars and trucks owned by individual customers, taxi cabs, local community transportation system buses, school buses, city and county car and truck fleets, and PG&E’s own 710 passenger cars and construction trucks.
“Fueling customer’s vehicles with natural gas is one of the many ways PG&E supports local communities and continues to push for a broad-based approach to limit greenhouse emissions,” said Stavropoulos. “Our program gives customers the ability to take some of the largest polluters off the road, replacing them with cleaner natural gas alternatives.”
