MAN Lion’s City GL CNG 18m
The MAN Lion’s City GL CNG city bus has been acclaimed as “Bus of the Year 2015”. In the “Euro Bus Test”, the articulated bus powered by gas impressed an international jury of recognised journalists. The award is one of the most prestigious trophies in the bus sector.
The MAN Lion’s City GL CNG with its compressed natural gas (CNG) drive in Euro 6 provides an extremely low-pollution, climate-friendly and at the same time economic mobility solution for urban traffic. Fuelled with biogas or e-gas, the articulated bus (18.75m) can be operated nearly CO2-neutral and therefore at the full electric vehicle level (well-to-wheel).
Its vehicle concept, designed for inner-city routes with very high passenger numbers, also helped the Lion’s City GL CNG to win the “Bus of the Year 2015”; its transportation capacity is up to 142 people. Five double-width doors ensure an optimum passenger flow and therefore short stop times. This allows bus operators to serve a route with less vehicles and profit from lower costs. The seat architecture in the interior of the bus has also been designed for short routes and time-saving entry and exit.
The economical MAN E2876 CNG engine achieves 310 HP and is designed for operation with natural gas, biogas or e-gas. The 10 CNG tanks on the roof enable a long operating range with their total volume of 2,050 litres.
According to Bus&Coach Buyer in an article covering the test, published before the result was announced, “Based on a ten year calculation and 60,000km annually, MAN claimed that the gas engine would save 15% over the cost of running a diesel bus. It only needed an order for 15 CNG buses to make the installation of a refuelling station viable.”
