Seeking to address the overwhelming air pollution issues of its big cities, particularly New Delhi, India’s Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change introduced a new greener mobility project last week that focused on two-wheeler greener mobility solutions in the country. The Honda Activa has been chosen as the scooter for the Pilot Project.
50 Honda Activa scooters, manufactured by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), will be tested by the home delivery personnel of Domino’s pizza chain.
The gearless scooters will be fitted with government-approved CNG conversion kits that have been pre-approved by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The conversion kits cost NR 14,500 (USD 215), but have been supplied without cost for the pilot project. Two cylinders will store enough Compressed Natural Gas to travel approx 250 kms.
Performance will be monitored during the test period and final calibration settings will be applied to future kit sales, assuming the pilot project demonstrates it can satisfy Ministry objectives.
