India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has released figures to show that the state of Gujarat has outstripped growth in all other regions including the National Capital Region (NCR) for the number of compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations, reports DNA. Of the 724 CNG stations operating across the country at the end of November 2011, Gujarat reportedly has 258, or one third of the total. New Delhi has 239, while Maharashtra follows next with 164.
Gujarat also accounts for more than one third of all natural gas consumed in India.
According to the DNA report, state energy minister, Saurabh Patel explained, “This is a result of definitive planning for turning Gujarat into a gas-based economy,” adding that Gujarat would have had even higher number of CNG outlets but for the strict regulatory mechanism.
Among other states, UP had 28 CNG stations, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 14 outlets. MP had 11 such stations, while Haryana had six and Tripura two CNG stations.
