Dongfeng CNG Hybrid Bus
China Yuchai International Limited (China Yuchai), through its main operating subsidiary Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Limited (GYMCL), has introduced China’s first compressed natural gas (CNG)-electric hybrid powertrain system. Following country-wide success with the CNG hybrid bus, the engine manufacturer for on- and off-road applications joined with vehicle manufacturer Dongfeng Motor Corporation to debut China’s first gas-electric hybrid truck.
The CNG hybrid truck was introduced at the Xinjiang International New Energy Vehicle and Electric Car Exhibition in Urumqi. The new parallel hybrid system and gas engine powertrain reportedly attracted great attention as the gas rich provinces in western China have been actively seeking more economic fuel solutions to address their growing transportation needs.
In addition, 10 gas-electric hybrid 8.5 metres buses installed with GYMCL’s light-duty YC4G engines were recently delivered to the Chongqing Pengshui public transportation company. Notwithstanding the development of new-energy buses, hybrid engines are still the preferred choice in Chongqing.
Mr. Weng Ming Hoh, President of China Yuchai, commented: “With this new plug-in gas-electric hybrid propulsion system […] we have successfully extended our technology solutions from our current application in the bus market to the much larger addressable truck market in China, the largest truck market in the world. As we develop additional models to meet the needs of different truck types, especially in the urban logistics and special vehicle areas, we see new areas for potential growth.”
