San Diego CNG bus in action

San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has secured Federal funding to purchase 45 Gillig buses powered by compressed natural gas, replacing older models that have reached the end of their useful life due to age and mileage. The agency was awarded $18 million from a $100 million dollar Department of Transportation (DOT) pool.

MTS has a goal to have more than 95 percent of their buses operating on CNG by 2017. The new buses will be manufactured in California, include on-board video surveillance inside and outside the vehicle, new wheelchair restraint systems, disk brakes, compressed natural gas tanks with 20-year lifespans and enhanced cooling systems.
