Adventurers Rainer Zietlow and Franz Janusiewicz successfully ended their marathon visit of 815 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Germany at the AMI car salon in Leipzig. The duo set off in January (see NGV Global article) to drive their VW Passat 1.4 TSI EcoFuel from Garmisch to Flensburg in 80 days. The VW Passat TSI EcoFuel easily passed the endurance test; “We had no problems with our car, even with extreme temperatures of minus 18 degrees Celsius in Lower Bavaria. Although the engine has a low capacity, it is impressive in terms of how it handles and it is definitively suitable for the highway – CNG cars are no longer slow with low power – with the new Passat it’s easy to combine fun with an ecological driving experience”, said Zietlow.
According to a press release from Swagelok, Zietlow was also impressed with the German CNG infrastructure. Germany leads the worldwide density tables in CNG refuelling stations. Its strong refuelling infrastructure is supported by the low price of the fuel, currently costing on average 1/3 less than petrol.
