‘Unlimited Methane’ Beneath Sea Bed

April 12, 2005

The Guardian is reporting that US scientists are investigating ways
of mining ‘unlimited methane’, stored in hydrate form on the ocean
floor in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the report, a drilling vessel was despatched to the area
last week to begin investigating how the methane could be harvested and
transported for use. Carbon in these and other potential sources of the
methane hydrate are said to exceed all known existing oil, gas and coal
reserves in the world combined.

Environmentalists are cautious, saying that making more fossil fuels available will accelerate global warming.
