Bangkok's green minibuses are amongst those earmarked for replacement.
The Islamic Bank of Thailand, the Land Transport Department and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority have reportedly co-signed an agreement to grant loans worth 1.5 billion baht (almost USD 45 million) to minibus operators to help them replace their current diesel-powered minibus fleets with natural gas-powered fleets. In a report published by the Thai ASEAN News Network, Deputy Transport Minister Prajak Kaewklaharn said the project is part of the government’s efforts to encourage public buses across the country to be fuelled with natural gas.
The report says the new buses are priced between USD 90,000 and 120,000, with average fuel cost per km being approx 25% that of diesel.
Replacements are required to be completed within the next six months. Loan conditions include 20% down payment, maximum six year term at 5.5% to 7.5% annual interest.
