The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has reportedly decided to adopt natural gas as the fuel of choice for all state-owned vehicles, and has developed a masterplan to implement the project, according to an item published in The East African. The master plan, which includes considerations for infrastructure and refuelling stations, will make it mandatory for government motor vehicles to be configured so they can use natural gas. Although the move seems likely to upset oil importers the government is strongly focussed on the obvious financial and environmental benefits of switching to natural gas.
Italian expertise and conversion kits are being utilised. Hassan M. Rajabu from the University of Dar es Salaam College of Engineering and Technology, who is co-ordinating the project, said “The Italian Emer Group has been involved in the supply of and training in conversion kits in a number of countries including Iran, China, Holland, Germany and India,” said Dr Rajabu.
TPDC, in partnership with Pan African Energy Tanzania Ltd, is managing the project, which will cost TSH 3.5 billion (USD 2.6 million).
