In the coastal region of Tanggu, home to the Binhai New Area and the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area, the Tanggu Fisheries Bureau is leading the way with what is said to be China’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered fishing fleet, reports Shuichan News. A demonstration project has been successfully completed and dual-fuel (LNG/diesel) technology will now be installed on fifty vessels.
The conversion is expected to be completed by September, at which time the fleet will become a strategy model for “fishing on LNG energy”.
The wooden coastal fishing vessels have each been consuming 17,000 litres of diesel a year. The converted vessels will now carry the natural gas equivalent of about 300 litres of diesel and have the option of dedicated diesel or dual-fuel diesel/gas operation. Using a natural gas and diesel ratio of 7:3, they will save about 20% fuel cost as well as significantly reduce harmful gas emissions.
