Stimulus Funds to Benefit Nebraska NGVs

February 19, 2010 | Source: USA, Nebraska

The US State of Nebraska is set to increase both natural gas infrastructure and natural gas vehicle numbers, thanks to a $650,000 grant proposal being considered by the Nebraska Environmental Trust. In recognition of the need to stimulate supply and demand if the State is to take advantage of the environmental and economical advantages of natural gas, the two-year grant will assist the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) encourage natural gas transportation in the cities of Omaha and Lincoln.

Omaha city will build two new CNG refuelling stations and the city of Lincoln’s Airport Authority (LAA) will convert seven pickups and buy two CNG fuelling units to fill them.

A Lincoln Journal Star article cites comments by John Woods, LAA Executive Director, who reportedly said that depending on how the trucks work, the authority will consider building a public CNG station on airport property near Interstate 80.

Doug Clark, vice president of governmental affairs and marketing for MUD, said a portion of the federal money will be used by an Omaha taxi company to put 50 CNG cabs on the streets, which in turn will help support the new stations, and will assist with the purchase of 20 metro CNG buses in Omaha.
