Spain’s Gas Natural Participates in Alternative Vehicle and Fuel Show

November 8, 2009 | Spain, Valladolid

Spanish energy company, Gas Natural has taken part in the first Valladolid Alternative Vehicle and Fuel Show, held in north-central Spain earlier in November. The company offered a technical seminar and sponsored the “Cubo de experiencias” zone, where companies, SMEs and private users were able to discuss their experiences of using alternative fuels in vehicles. The exhibition, whose main aim was to provide information on alternative vehicles and their fuels, included a technical programme, commercial sessions, demonstrations of case studies, and product presentations and demonstrations.

Natural gas vehicles are being incorporated into many fleets in the country’s cities. In Castile and León, the buses in the cities of Burgos and Salamanca run on natural gas. The use of natural gas in transport prevents the emission of 23 tonnes of carbon monoxide (CO), 300 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 17 tonnes of particles into the atmosphere each year, in addition to 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), a volume equivalent to the natural gas consumption of 170,000 homes.

Gas Natural is currently in negotiations with Valladolid’s municipal waste collection and street cleaning company on the installation of a compressed natural gas filling station to supply its fleet of heavy vehicles, as well as other public service and goods transport vehicles operating in the area.

The company also has vehicular natural gas operations in the provinces of Barcelona, Coruña, Madrid, Seville and Valencia. It is currently working on the installation of new filling stations for public service vehicle fleets in a range of locations around Spain.

Running this type of vehicle on natural gas reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides and of suspended particles, two of the main pollutants affecting human health, by over 85%.

The use of vehicular natural gas also reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by up to 20%, and the noise levels in decibels from vehicles that use this fuel are up to 50% lower than those from diesel vehicles.
