Sembcorp Environment, Singapore’s largest environmental solutions company, has launched a trial for a new environmentally-friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) truck to be deployed in its waste collection services. Sembcorp is reportedly the first company in Asia to use this state-of-the-art truck, the Mercedes-Benz Econic, in its operations. The company is partnering Daimler South East Asia in this one year trial, which aims to test market response and customer demand for CNG vehicles in the municipal, industrial and commercial waste market. The Econic will be deployed to cover some areas that Sembcorp serves in Singapore.

Commenting on the trial, Sembcorp Environment Chief Operating Officer Goh Swee Ooi said, “This trial is in line with Sembcorp’s effort to introduce promising new green technologies and solutions to serve our customers. Together with our partner, we will use this opportunity to gauge the market demand and to demonstrate the benefits of this state-of-the-art truck.”

The Econic truck is powered by GPlus CNG, which is marketed by Sembcorp Industries’ natural gas business, and complies with the rigorous Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV) standard. Its carbon dioxide emissions are below the limits set by the EuroV standard. The Econic’s technological combustion process allows smooth running of its engine, reducing noise emission by as much as 50% compared to a regular diesel truck. These reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and noise will mean noticeable benefits for customers in areas which the new truck will be serving, Sembcorp states.

Sembcorp Environment is a Singaporean environmental management company with operations spanning 36 cities in Singapore, Australia and India. It provides a full spectrum of environmental management solutions, including waste collection, recycling services, waste-to-resource, waste-to-energy, landfill and composting.
