SGS Accredited as Spain’s First Authorized Inspection Company for CNG Cylinders

February 28, 2010 | Spain

Global inspection, verification, testing and certification company SGS SA is the first inspection company in Spain to obtain authorization to conduct visual inspections of cylinders for compressed natural gas vehicles from the Departamento de Innovación, Universidades y Empresas de la Generalitat de Cataluña. The authorization comes at a time when natural gas transportation is experiencing rapid growth around the world.

SGS Industrial Services visual inspections are in accordance with European Union directives UN-ECE R110 and UNE-26525, which regulate the approval of special engine components for compressed natural gas vehicles as well as inspection of the cylinder installation and verification of high pressure cylinders for the on-board storage of natural gas as fuel for road vehicles.

SGS says that its multidisciplinary competences and innovative technology result in significant cost and time savings in comparison to other inspection methods such as hydrostatic tests.

Visual Inspection (VI) is one of the most widely used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. This technique can work as both a preventive and a reactive tool. Visual Inspection can also be used in combination with other surface inspection methods for flaws that are not easily identified by the naked eye.
