The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has reported a recent rapid increase in the number of compressed natural gas (CNG) auto rickshaw, with the number of rickshaws running on CNG reaching over 6,000 in August from 3,500 in March this year, reports Times of India (TOI).
Pune passed a law making it compulsory for auto rickshaw owners in the city to convert to CNG by May 1, 2009 but supply issues have been a major deterrent to compliance until recently.
According to the latest RTO statistics available, around 42,000 auto rickshaws operate in the city, out of which 6,228 are now running on CNG. The number appears to have increased as a response to the improved volume and regularity of supply.
The TOI report cites an RTO official: “Till May 2009, there were only 400 CNG rickshaws in the city, a number that went up to 3,500 this March. Now, in matter of four months, from March to August, this number has jumped up to over 6,000.”
Regional Transport Authority (RTA) member Baba Shinde said, “At present, there are nine CNG refilling centres within Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the one at Shivajinagar bus depot will start soon. There is no longer any shortage of CNG supply in the city.”
