Islamabad, Pakistan
Pakistan’s Planning Commission has approved Rs 5 billion ($US83
million) towards the city of Karachi’s mass transport plan, which will
see 8,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses on city streets within the
next four years (see earlier report)
Business Recorder reports that the funds will be made available
through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) with Rs 500
million ($US8.3 million) to be allocated ‘on a priority basis’. Similar
programs are expected to be established in other major cities,
including Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad to cope with Pakistan’s
rapid economic development.
The project will introduce Euro III CNG buses as well as ensuring
sufficient refuelling infrastructure is in place under private-public
partnerships.
The Federal Government has also introduced duty exemptions for natural
gas vehicles (NGVs) and NGV components to encourage widespread adoption.
