Jorge Juárez, general manager of the Peruvian Chamber of Natural Gas Vehicles (CPGNV), has estimated that in 2015 there will be 340 000 vehicles using compressed natural gas in Lima and the provinces, predominantly in Lima and Callao, but also in the cities of Piura, Chiclayo (Lambayeque) and Ica, according to agencia peruana de noticias (andina). There are reportedly approximately 95 000 NGVs in Lima and Callao (August 2010) with that number expected to reach 112 000 by year end.
“Gas Comprimido del Perú (Gascop) is offering compressed natural gas in Piura and will soon begin offering gas in Chiclayo. The company also plans to build a gas distribution system in Ica and set up filling stations there”, Juárez is quoted as saying.
In Peru, all vehicle conversions must undergo a certification process to meet emissions requirements. The reduced pollution is said to being having a positive effect in downtown Lima where there is a reduced incidence of bronchopulmonary diseases.
