NGVs Part of Rome’s Sustainable Mobility Exhibition

May 12, 2008

Fiat Panda.jpgItaly, Rome

Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) will feature among the alternative fuel exhibits at the new Fiera di Roma "MotechEco" between 22 and 25 May under the theme of sustainable mobility. Fiat Group will be show the Panda MultiEco, Mercedes-Benz will present the Italian public with a preview of the new B 170 NGT Blue Efficiency.

The low emission – low consumption Panda MultiEco operates on methane
and gasoline. It features a unique modular panel system to store CNG
fuel cylinders under the floor. The design ensures a range of 350km
without reduction of load capacity. The considerable benefits when
compared with a petrol version include reduced CO2 emissions (by 42% in
urban cycle and 32% in mixed cycle), allowing this case to reach the
value of 90 g/km. The lower consumption and lower cost of methane lead
to a substantial reduction in the cost associated mileage (-63%).

Fiat will also present the innovative HyperPanda (Hydrogen for Panda)
prototype, which uses hydrogen mixtures of methane (typically on 20 to
30% by volume of hydrogen). Such NGVs, with reduced emissions of CO2
and pollutants, all without significant penalties in performance, are
seen as a transition to the more widespread use of pure hydrogen in the
future.

Using bivalent methane gas and gasoline, the Mercedes-Benz car retains
the same power (85 kW/116 hp) reducing consumption and emissions with
only 135 g / km CO2 emissions down by 17% compared to the version
gasoline. At a consumption rate of 4.9 Kg of methane gas per 100 km,
the price per kilometre is lower by about 50% compared to the cost of
petrol.
