NGVs Coming to the Dominican Republic

May 9, 2007

Dominican Republic, Boca Chica

143,000 vehicles, 140 CNG stations within the next three years

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) will soon be in operation in the Dominican Republic following the inauguration of the country’s first natural gas compression and distribution plant reports Dominican Today. President Leonel Fernandez was on hand to launch the plant which will service industrial and domestic uses as well as transport, with 143,000 NGVs expected to be operational within the next three years.

The government has a goal of installing 140 NGV stations within the next three years. Natural gas has reportedly become the alternative fuel of choice for the Dominican Republic over LPG due to low costs, 2% less than LPG and lower emissions. LPG is reportedly costing the government $US200 million in subsidies each year.

Conversion workshops are being established in the country with conversions expected to cost around $700 per vehicle.
