NGVI Receives LNG Tank Certification and Production Licence in Korea

July 2, 2010 | Korea, Chuncheon

NGVI's LNG tank - now certified in Korea

Chuncheon based natural gas vehicle (NGV) systems solutions provider NGVI, Inc., last quarter completed the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGSC) certification process for production of cryogenic LNG tanks for vehicles. NGVI’s vehicle conversion subsidiary, NGVS, became only the third company in Korea to receive the KGS AC416 license and is engaged in an on-going examination and testing process of its pilot facilities and LNG tank products.

“NGVI’s KGS certification represents an important step in Korea’s supply chain to support a domestic LNG vehicle industry,” said NGVI President Kevin Park, who is leading an investment drive to finance the development of a new LNG tank manufacturing facility.

Korea’s first LNG project was initiated in December 2004 and was completed in May 2008. This extensive project involved multiple studies, technology and standards development, demonstrations and construction of L-CNG stations. The country’s keen interest in LNG continues with the current business model under the leadership of the national gas utility, KOGAS, which in 2008 announced plans to construct 200-300 L-CNG stations.

NGVI is carrying out a number of performance tests and is also seeking approval of a patent for unique anti-vibration technology for LNG tanks for vehicles.

“Reduced Greenhouse emissions, compatibility with diesels engines, stable supply and pricing, on top of improved refueling speeds and driving range are factors compelling the LNG vehicle industry in Korea,” affirms Kevin Park. “LNG is fast becoming an increasingly important solution to Korea’s energy and environment insecurities.”
