NGVAmerica Comments on US DOE $300M Funding

August 28, 2009 | Source: NGVAmerica | USA

Funding Expected to Result in “Several Hundred Million Dollars of New Investment in NGV Projects”

NGVAmerica offers some insight into the announcement by the U.S Department of Energy’s Clean Cities’ Program on the selection of alternative fuel projects to be funded as part of the $300 million provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.  NGVAmerica reports that the DOE was limited by law to a selection of only 30 proposals out of the more than 100 submissions requesting funding for alternative fuel vehicles and fueling stations. They selected 25 cost-share projects for awards that ranging from $5,000,000 – $15,000,000. Of the projects awarded funding, 19 include significant investment for NGVs.

NGVAmerica has applauded the efforts of its member companies and Clean Cities Coalition personnel in putting together an impressive array of projects.

A press release issued by DOE provides summaries of the individual projects that were selected.  The NGV funded projects include funding for refuse trucks, LNG trucking corridor projects, biogas projects, hundreds of drayage trucks to be operated at port facilities, taxicab and other public and private fleet vehicles.  A shortened list of NGV projects only was reported by NGV Global last week.

NGVAmerica says the impact of these projects will go far beyond the numbers included in the list of projects, because all of the selected projects include a 50 percent cost-share requirement. Many of the proposed stations also should support efforts in future years to expand the number of NGVs.  The total investment figures for natural gas projects are not yet in but NGVAmerica expects that this new funding will result in several hundred million dollars of new investment in NGV projects when DOE funding and cost-share funding are taken into consideration.
