NGV Sessions at World Gas Conference – Study Group Report Released

October 9, 2009

wgc09-iguNatural gas vehicles (NGVs) took a proactive role, featuring in two sessions at this week’s International Gas Union’s (IGU) triennial World Gas Conference (WGC 2009) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The conference is a highlight of the world gas industry calendar, attracting 3,000 NGV utility and other delegates from all around the world. With Argentina the second ranked country worldwide in terms of natural gas vehicles (home to 1.7 million NGVs), Buenos Aires formed a fitting backdrop to the sessions, the first featuring the release of a three year 142 page study group report on natural gas vehicles, and the second a Strategic Panel chaired by IANGV President Rich Kolodziej.

The IGU is a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the technical and economic progress of the natural gas industry. The members of IGU are associations and entities of the gas industries in 71 countries, with the IANGV having Affiliated Association status.

The study group report, presented in a session titled “NGVs: A Global Eco-Efficient Mobility Solution”, follows a similar report from the same group at the Word Gas Conference in Amsterdam in 2006, entitled Global Opportunities for Natural Gas Vehicles. The newly released report covers the latest in technology advances, several fleet case studies from around the world, a review of the current market status and future prospects. The study group also had a series of related presentations in conjunction with the release of the report.

The conference also saw the chairman (Davor Matic, OMV, Croatia) and deputy chairman (Eugene Pronin, Gazprom, Russia) of the IGU study group (5.3) exchange places for the newly commenced triennium which will run until the next world gas conference in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in 2012.

The strategic panel elaborated on the issues raised during the study group session, featuring summaries of successful NGV programs developed around the world as well as more detail on technological advances within the industry.

NB – Copies of presentations from both sessions will be posted on the IANGV website within the next week.
