Natural Gas Vehicles Shine On Switzerland’s “EcoMobiListe”

March 8, 2009

Switzerland

Natural gas fueled vehicles stand out as overall winners in the annual vehicle environmental impact survey carried out by Switzerland’s Transport and Environment Association (ATE), known as the EcoMobiListe. Natural gas and biogas models fill 3 of the first 5 places and 4 of the first 10 in the overall category. Distinguished models include Fiat’s Grande Punto Natural Power, Volvo’s V70 Multifuel*, Mercedes-Benz’s B NGT and Opel’s Zafira 1.6 CNG.

33.3% of the 80 best models selected for the ten categories are fuelled by natural gas / biogas. By way of comparison, only 7.5% are hybrid models, while ethanol models are completely absent (primarily due to shortcomings in the network of service stations offering the fuel). In the van category, natural gas and biogas models fill the first seven of ten places. In the lower middle class there are 8 natural gas vehicles in the top 10.

The ATE applies an objective system based on recognized different criteria, to  a range of several hundred models available on the Swiss market.  The winners list (www.ecomobiliste.ch) is published each year just before the Motor Show in Geneva.

Some 7200 vehicles now run on natural gas and biogas in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, fuelled throiugh a network of 112 filling stations. (Source – German)
