A meeting of the UN Working Party 1 on Road Safety (WP1) in Geneva has resulted in further success for the NGV industry, with the group agreeing to allow Consolidated Resolution (R.E.2) status for LNG fuelling station road signage (see graphic) proposed by the IANGV. The proposal was submitted subsequent to IANGV’s successful efforts to achieve R.E. 2 status for CNG fuelling station signage last year, part of a joint submission with the AEGPL for LPG road signage. Achieving R.E.2 status provides international legal justification to use these signs as accepted by the UN, although it does not legally bind countries to use the signage.
Typically R.E.2 status is a step that can lead to including the signage in the 1968 Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which makes them legally binding as international road signs for countries that are signatories to the Convention. IANGV will continue with efforts to include the signage in the convention but will promote their use in the meantime.
Also successful was a proposal by a Norwegian contingent to allow Hydrogen signage attaining R.E.2 status as well. Additional proposals are expected for electric vehicles sometime in the near future. The IANGV proposed amendment, ECE/Trans WP.1/2010/6 (Norway and IANGV) Consideration of the Amendments to the Consolidated Resolution on Road Signs and Signals is available at www.unece.org/trans/roadsafe/wp12010.html. Reports on the meetings of WP.1 are available at: www.unece.org/trans/roadsafe/wp1rep.html. IANGV members can also see a full IANGV meeting report on the IANGV Members’ Portal.
