Nationwide there are reportedly now more than 600 Mercedes-Benz Econic natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in use as garbage trucks. The first vehicle of the Econic series commenced operations in 2002. Designed for municipal collection and distribution transport, the
Econic comes in several sizes, with 18, 26 and 32 tonnes permitted
total weight. The gas engine is the six-cylinder engine with capacity
of 6.88 litres generating 205 kW (279 hp). Power transmission is via a
six-speed automatic gearbox.
