Farm based reactors to feed major biomethane plant
Sweden continues its march towards energy independence with the opening of two more biomethane driven fuelling stations in Boden and Östersund in the north of the country. The stations follow on from another station commissioned earlier this year in Skellefteå.
The Swedish Government has also announced a climate investment program, commencing in 2008, with 48 % of all allocated funds going to support of biomethane investments – a total of some € 22 million ($US30 million). Separate funding is also available for new gas refuelling stations to the value of 30% of the station investment.
Svensk Biogas AB, a municipally owned company in Linköping, has also received this year's environmental award from the Swedish Green Party in recognition of innovative work with biomethane production from different waste resources. Party spokesman, Peter Eriksson, pledged continued support for at least one biomethane refuelling station in every Swedish municipality, and at least 100 production plants spread over the country.
Meanwhile, Göteborg Post reports on first biomethane plant using a new concept. Instead of trucking manure from farms to a large central biogas production unit, each farm will instead have its own simple biogas reactor. The raw biogas from the plant will then be sent via low pressure plastic pipelines to one centrally located upgrading unit where the gas is upgraded to pure biomethane for use in vehicles. The residuals from the AD reactors installed on each farm will be spread on the farmland. All the nutrients are still there, the process just takes out carbon and hydrogen atoms in the form of methane.
