Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in Japan has begun to market the Minicab CNG, a small van that runs on compressed natural gas. The tank holds 81 liters of CNG, which can carry the vehicle 290km. Compared with the gasoline-powered Minicab van, the new CNG model has 20 per cent better fuel economy reportedly saving motorists around $1 per 100 kms travelled. Carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced 15 per cent compared to the gasoline version.
As a vehicle that qualifies as an eco-car, it is 100 per cent exempt from automobile acquisition and weight taxes. Available in two-seater or four-seater options, the Minicab CNG features a 660cc engine, automatic transmission and two-wheel drive.
The new Minicab CNG is the automaker’s first such vehicle since sales of the previous model were halted in November 2007. It was co-developed with subsidiary Mitsubishi Automotive Logistics Technology Co.
