Miller Waste First in Canada to Take Delivery of CNG-Powered Trash Truck

Miller Waste adds first CNG-powered front loader to its fleet.

London Machinery Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company and exclusive representative of McNeilus refuse products in Canada, has delivered a compressed natural gas (CNG) refuse vehicle to Canadian waste hauler Miller Waste Systems (Miller), headquartered in Markham, Ontario. Taking delivery of the CNG-powered McNeilus Atlantic Series front loader makes Miller the first in Canada to take delivery of a CNG-powered refuse truck.

Recognized as a leader in the refuse industry in Canada, Miller is also the first private sector refuse company to order a CNG truck. “Miller Waste Systems has been involved with green programs for years, from material recycling facilities to composting. Taking the initiative with CNG-powered refuse trucks is a logical next step,” said Dean Ellis, corporate manager of equipment, maintenance and purchasing.

“We are very excited to see our CNG-powered refuse trucks working on the road,” Ellis said, adding that there were other technological benefits that attracted them to the truck. “For us, there is also a great secondary benefit regarding technological simplicity. When you see all of the peripheral hardware it takes to make a diesel engine 2010 EPA compliant and compare that to a relatively simple CNG-powered engine, it’s an easy decision — less complicated is better.”

Bob Monchamp, general manager of London Machinery, Inc. said, “These units have become very popular with customers in the states and the management at Miller Waste Systems was very interested in bringing that technology to Canada.”

CNG-powered trucks already meet 2010 U.S. emissions standards without the need of additional afterburning hardware that is both expensive and heavy. In addition, CNG is considerably cheaper than diesel, and the engines are also far quieter, which is another benefit that drivers and maintenance personnel frequently comment on.

Miller is hoping this unit will generate more municipal tenders including requirements for CNG-powered refuse vehicles.

CNGVA President Alicia Milner explained that the company received up to $15,000 in funding from the Province of Ontario’s Green Commercial Vehicle Program for the purchase of the CNG refuse truck, the first truck to be funded via this program that encourages the use of lower GHG emitting technologies for Class 3-7 vehicles.
