For the first time, Mercedes-Benz Australia is offering a factory-fitted bi-fuel natural gas alternative to the Australian marketplace – the EU5-compliant Sprinter NGT. The bi-fuel vehicle (which operates on both petrol and natural gas, alternating at the push of a button) is available as the 316 NGT (Mid-Wheelbase and Long-Wheelbase van and cab-chassis) and the 516 NGT (single cab-chassis). Thanks to mechanical supercharging, the engine develops an output of 115 kW and a maximum torque of 240 Nm. These figures apply whether in natural gas or petrol operation, outperforming the previous versions of Sprinter available in Australia.
An operating range of up to 1200 km is gained from using both fuels. When operating on natural gas with a full tank, the standard Sprinter NGT is able to cover around 200 to 450 kilometres depending on the model.
The Sprinter comes with 3 CNG cylinders fitted as standard, plus a 100 litre petrol tank. Three additional CNG cylinders can be fitted as an optional extra. All tanks are fitted under the body so there’s no loss of space in the body of the van.
Natural gas engines emit practically no particulates, and emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide are drastically lower compared to diesel. In addition, when compared to petrol engines, the engine reduces CO2 emissions by around 25%. If operated on biogas, the Sprinter NGT is even practically CO2-neutral.
The Sprinter NGT also sports the Mercedes-Benz BlueEFFICIENCY badge – a symbol that indicates the use of sustainable technologies, highest efficiency, and thus improved fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions,
