Trans-Cab aims for 3000 CNG taxis by mid-2011

C. Melchers GmbH Singapore branch is to provide Trans-Cab Services Pte Ltd with 1,000 Italian-made OMVL kits and German-made Xperion Cylinders for the conversion of their new Toyota Wish 2.0 litre vehicles to CNG bi-fuel taxis. The cylinders are delivered in two sizes (90 liter and 39 liter cylinders) which are both installed in the vehicle. The two Type IV cylinders carry approximately 22 kg of gas, providing an average mileage of 280 km.

The type IV cylinders from Xperion are very light due to their carbon fiber design, resulting in significantly improved economy. For comparison, a normal type I (Steel) cylinder (90litre) has a weight of 95kg (empty weight) and the equivalent size from Xperion weighs only 30kg.

Transcab has a fleet of 2,600 vehicles. Melchers says Transcab have some 1,000 taxis currently operating on CNG and intend to increase this number by another 3,000 units in the next one to one-and-half-years.

Singapore is home to the largest compressed natural gas (CNG) station in the world. Covering a total area of 7,065m², the station will have 44 dispensers (22×2) for cars and 2 dispensers for buses and trucks. Compression and dispenser equipment was also supplied by Melchers.
