Medellin Buses Go Natural Gas

March 30, 2010 | Colombia, Medellin

Metroplus Buses in Medellin could soon all be CNG-operated.

The city of Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, had decided to operate its mass transit system, Metroplus S.A., on natural gas. The buses will service routes to Cartagena, Santa Marta, Sincelejo and Bogota, according to a report carried by Portafolio. Colombian compressed natural gas (CNG) station operator Gazel reportedly states that other cities will follow if more can be done to increase the take-up of natural gas in his country.

In Colombia there are apparently more than 300,000 vehicles currently operating on natural gas vehicle (NGV), fuelled at more than 530 service stations in much of the territory, particularly on major highways. Gomez said that in 2009 more than 21,000 NGVs were added, with a further 27,000 anticipated in 2010.
