LI Community Announces Natural Gas Refuse Trucks

May 8, 2008

USA, New York State

The Board of the Town of Brookhaven (Long Island, NY) has passed two key resolutions to switch trash trucks to natural gas.  One resolution awards 13 ‘NGV only’ contracts to private trash haulers for the collection of refuse, recyclables and yard waste for their 35 collection bid areas (CBAs).  The second resolution awards a contract to Clean Energy to construct a CNG fuelling station at the Yaphank landfill, and provides a pricing agreement for a seven-year period.   The new contracts will take effect on January 1, 2009.

The length of the contract with the private haulers will be seven years
with three one-year renewal periods.  The prior traditional-fuel
contracts had a base period of five years.  National Grid (formerly
KeySpan Energy Delivery) is the local gas distribution company, and
will make significant investments in the gas infrastructure to deliver
the gas to the new fueling facility.  Currently, there are 75 refuse
collection trucks under contract with the Town of Brookhaven providing
the refuse and recycling services mentioned above.  This project is
expected to displace approximately 700,000 gallons of diesel per year.
