Karachi CNG Bus Project Gains Approval

August 13, 2009 | Source: Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) | Pakistan, Karachi

Pakistan’s federal government has reportedly approved a new bus project that could see 1700 CNG buses on Karachi’s streets in the current year, 100 of which will be resourced directly by the city government. Announced by City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, the federal government will give a subsidy of Rs 300 million (USD 3.6 million) for 1600 CNG buses, according to an APP report. Only those companies running 25 or more buses will receive the subsidy. Karachi’s population has more than doubled in the past ten years, now exceeding 18 million.
