iTREN-2030 Projects Major Growth for Natural Gas Vehicles

October 31, 2009 | Source: The Oil Drum: Europe | Europe

35 Million NGVs in EU by 2030

Outcomes from the final workshop of the Integrated Transport and Energy Baseline Until 2030 Modelling Project (iTREN-2030) suggest a strong future for natural gas vehicles in Europe. An Oil Drum article discusses the project’s characteristics and summarises conclusions that will soon culminate in the European Commission (EC) white paper on transport policies to 2020, due for release in 2010. Amongst other outcomes, the integrated scenario shows a growth to 35 million compressed natural gas cars in EU countries by 2030.

The Oil Drum item says the iTREN-2030 team reached the following conclusions related to transportation:

  • Total CO2 emissions from transport decrease due to declining emissions from road transport.
  • Average CO2 emissions of the EU-27 (EU member countries) fleet until 2030, of 140 g/km, are not sufficient to reach the policy goal of 105 g/km in 2020.
  • Despite breakthroughs of battery technology, the potential of electric cars for long distances is supposed to be limited.
  • Motorisation in EU-12 (Eastern Europe) reaches the EU-15 (Western Europe) level in 2030.
