Indian Railways on Track for More CNG Trains

July 28, 2006

Successful operations of dual-fuel compressed natural gas (CNG)
diesel trains by Indian Railways in Delhi could lead to more
locomotives running longer routes.

Indian Railways first began trials of dual-fuel locomotives in April last year and, according to an Iris News report, expects to have seven locomotives operating on city routes by the end of this year.

The item quotes an Indraprastha Gas director as saying more units will
be added next year, bringing the total to 20, with some expected to
operate on intercity routes.

Intercity operations will be subject to refuelling infrastructure availability.
