India, Delhi
India’s Standing Committee on Emission Regulations, a body within the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways, has approved the use of hydrogen and CNG (compressed natural gas) blends (HCNG) as fuel for transport use. Once the approval has been gazetted, blends of up to 20% hydrogen will be permitted in commercial applications. Projects are currently underway in India involving major local vehicle OEMS, Ashok Leyland, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors and HCNG blend experts, Eden Hydrogen(see separate NGV Global story). HCNG blends are being introduced primarily to take advantage of the NOx (nitrogen oxide) reductions arising from using the fuel and also to serve as a pathway to hydrogen vehicles.
