Karachi’s first dedicated CNG buses

City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has launched 50 environment-friendly CNG buses, 25 supplied by Hino and 25 by Daewoo, at a ceremony presided over by Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan, according to a The News report. Financed by the city’s government at a cost of Rs218 million (USD 2.64 million), the buses each have a capacity for 80 passengers, 44 seated and the remaining standing.

Dr Khan said these are the first dedicated CNG buses introduced in Karachi. Another 100 buses are earmarked for purchase from the next budget, Khan added.

The District Officer, Public Transport Management Operation and Regulation, Muhammad Athar reportedly informed The News that the city government has also appointed five CNG stations for these buses. The Executive District Officer for Transport, Iftikhar Qaimkhani, is reported as saying Karachi now needs 11,500 wide-bodied buses.
