Greening Garbage Trucks Report Available

September 5, 2006

Earlier this year, the findings of a new INFORM report, Greening
Garbage Trucks: Trends in Alternative Fuel Use 2002 – 2005, were
publicly released. The report is now available in printed form.
The new Greening Garbage Trucks study was an undate of the original
study done in 2002.  The update documents strong growth in the use
of alternative fuel trucks in the US and internationally – with some
interest in bio-diesel, hybrid and bio-methane use but predominantly in
the use of natural gas trucks.

During the period covered, the number of natural gas trucks on US
roads doubled (from 692 to almost 1,500) and the number of communities
adopting this technology did as well (26 to 57). The 89 percent growth
rate in recent years is four times the rate of natural gas vehicle
expansion overall. Fleet operators interviewed for this report had
mainly positive views of these trucks, based on their performance and
environmental benefits, benefits to the health of their workers,
increasing affordability, and positive community responses.

The report notes that, while 1,500 natural gas trucks is a significant
start, it represents less than 1 percent of the 136,000 refuse trucks
operating in this country.
