German Natural Gas Vehicle Demand Outstripping Supply

September 1, 2006

Spurred along by rising oil prices, German motorists, who now have
680 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, are embracing CNG vehicles,
with the Zafira proving most popular at 26,000 units per year. Buyers
ordering a CNG Zafira now will have to wait until late autumn before
taking delivery.

Volkswagen, despite producing 125 CNG Tourans per week will not be able
to fill orders till November while the Caddy Life also has an eight
week waiting period. The CNG Ford Focus c-Max, with only 400 units
available per year, is currently available on a 16 week waiting period
while Volvo and Fiat are fulfilling orders within 11 and ten weeks
respectively.

Renault Kangoo enters market

Motorists may find comfort however, with another OEM entry to
the market, the CNG Renault Kangoo. Available as a passenger vehicle or
a goods vehicle the 1.6 litre engine produces 82 horsepower, giving a
top speed of 158 km/h. 13 kilograms of  CNG capacity gives the
vehicle a driving range of 220 kilometres on CNG, with a 50 litre
gasoline tank providing additional driving range if required.

Fiat has shown it’s commitment to marketing in Germany,
launching a website dedicated to it’s extensive CNG  vehicle range. With
three models and four variants the site features vehicle information
and news, as well as a financial calculator to estimate possible
savings from using the CNG vehicles. Visitors can also book a test
drive through the site.
