Growth in the popularity of biogas continues to see new records being set in the industry. Just weeks after our report on what was then to be the largest biogas plant in Europe, Swedish based Flotech Ltd have announced they have almost completed construction of the world’s largest plant, also in Europe in the City of Madrid, Spain. The project, awarded to Flotech as part of the La Paloma Biogas Upgrading System, will upgrade the biogas to biomethane for use in the city bus fleets, producing the gas from household waste.
The plant will treat 4000m3/hour of raw biogas with two Greenlane CSFR2000 Biogas Upgrading Systems. Assembly commenced on site last June and is scheduled for completion in September 2007.
The plant will have a capacity of 25MW of gas per year, equivalent to more than 33 million cubic meters of biogas annually, equivalent to 2600 litres of petrol per hour.
The Greenlane water-scrubbing system is Flotech’s original design. Flotech Limited has installed its gas-purifying technology in many European cities and Japan during the last decade. Scientific results show that methane fuel is not only more cost-effective than conventional diesel and petrol, but also offers substantial environmental benefits through cleaner exhaust emissions.
