First OEM CNG-Powered Paratransit Taxi for North America

May 5, 2009 | USA, Florida
Vehicle Production Group's MV-1 Taxi - available 2010

The Vehicle Production Group has debutted its MV-1 paratransit vehicle — the first vehicle designed and built, direct from the manufacturer, to meet or exceed Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA) guidelines at AF&V 2009 in Florida. In addition to a conventional gasoline engine, the MV-1 will be the only vehicle in its class to offer an OEM-engineered and assembled dedicated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powertrain option. With three Type III CNG tanks integrated into the vehicle’s design, the MV-1 has an estimated range of 250-miles, while maintaining a best-in class luggage compartment.

Fleets and Fuels reports that work is already underway to secure both U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board certification, according to VPG engineer Leo Darocha. Both gasoline and CNG versions of the MV-1 are powered by GM’s 4.3-liter Vortec V-6 engine.

The new vehicle, first reported in NGV Global August 2008, developed with some $10 million in support from Clean Energy, will be built by assembly partner AM General on a former Hummer line in Indiana.
