The Fiat 900cc two-cylinder Twin-Air engine - launched in Geneva

The Twin-Air engine will produce less than 100gms/km CO2

Visitors to the Geneva Motor Show this year will find the two cylinder 85 HP Twin-Air (900 cc) engine, developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies to run on either natural gas or petrol. In the world preview, the engine will be displayed both in a showcase and fitted aboard a Fiat 500, the first model on which it will be introduced next September. Performance details are expected to be revealed at the show.

Progenitor of a new family of two-cylinder engines, the Twin-Air implements a revolutionary MultiAir system combined with specific fluid dynamics optimised for the best fuel efficiency, cutting CO2 emissions by up to 30%, and is said to be the only two-cylinder engine currently available in a car in Europe.

The 900cc engine family will feature one naturally-aspirated and two turbo-charged versions, developing 50kW, 65kW and 78kW respectively.

The 65kW Twin-Air engine will be used in the 2010 Fiat 500, offering 25 percent more power and 15 percent less fuel consumption than the current 1.2 litre engine.

Limited information to date says the Fiat 500 equipped with Twin-Air will produce less than 100 gms/km CO2. The greenest current version of the 500, the PUR-02 equipped with a standard stop-start system, currently emits 113 gms/km.
