Concerned with the increasing levels of air pollution caused by motor vehicles in Asia’s major cities, a group of researchers brought together by Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) initiated the Sustainable Automobile Society in East Asia (SASEA) project. The group concludes in its report that to build up a better automobile society in Asia, it needs to work on the following issues:
Technical measures:
(1) Reduction of emissions from motor vehicles by upgrading inspection and maintenance systems
(2) Reduction of emissions from motor vehicles by improving the quality of fuels
(3) Strengthening the restriction on emissions from motor vehicles
(4) Popularizing clean energy and clean-energy vehicles
(5) Promotion of harmonization of technical regulations.
Non technical measures:
(1) Promotion of environmental education and awareness campaigns
(2) Upgrading air pollution monitoring systems.
Taking into consideration the health costs and economic development, the group also concludes earlier implementation of air pollution reduction policies will gain better economic development in the future.
The next ERIA SASEA workshop will be held late 2009.
