USA, Burlington
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $205,523 to Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) to replace three of their older diesel vehicles with new compressed natural gas (CNG) models. The federal money will cover up to 25 percent of the cost of the new vehicle.
“The lifetime cancer risk from diesel soot in Chittenden County exceeds the risk of all other air toxics tracked by the EPA combined,†Tom Moreau, CSWD’s general manager said. He added that the diesel vehicle replacement program will help reduce emissions by more than 75 percent.
Effective at cutting air pollution, reducing diesel emissions benefits people who suffer from asthma and other respiratory problems, Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator of EPA’s New England Office, said. (Source)
