The Nevada Appeal reports that bad weather has hampered latest attempts at the record, but with a top speed so far of around 240 miles per hour, the Lessman team has set what appears to be an unofficial record for alternative fuels. Not bad considering it was their first attempt!

The Appeal report quotes Lessman - “I wanted to do something different; quite frankly I thought it would be cool to go really fast with alternative fuel,” Lessman said. “There is a perception out there that alternative fuels are lower performance, and I had a point to prove.”

Lessman is going to a lot of trouble to prove the point, using a 572 cubic inch, 1,500 horsepower engine to power the Streamliner.

With Bonneville being fickle in terms of weather, the next attempt won’t happen until next year. Details of the team’s progress can be followed on the Lessman website .
