Input invited by August 28

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Weights and Measures Division (WMD) has issued a notice calling for input into a periodic review of  International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) Recommendation 81 (R 81) “Dynamic Measuring Devices and Systems for Cryogenic Liquids” and participation in a National Work Group on related issues and standards.

The purpose of this notice is to:

  • make you aware that the international standard for devices and measuring systems used to meter cryogenic liquids such as hydrogen is up for review,
  • request your input by August 28, 2007 on whether there is sufficient justification to revise this standard or to confirm the document for another five years, and
  • invite you to participate in a U.S. National Work Group (USWNG) that will be responsible for establishing U.S. positions on standards for devices and measuring systems used to meter cryogenic liquids (please indicate your level of interest by selecting and returning the appropriate reply listed below).

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Weights and Measures Division (WMD) is responsible for representing the interest of U.S. stakeholders on International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML*) Recommendation 81 (R 81) “Dynamic Measuring Devices and Systems for Cryogenic Liquids.”  In accordance with OIML Directive for Technical Work, R 81 is due for its periodic review.  NIST WMD requests your input by August 28, 2007 on the appropriateness of the legal requirements in R 81 so that we can establish a U.S. position on whether or not this document needs an update.

We are also looking for participants in a U.S. National Work Group from organizations that either develop related technical standards, manufacture, or enforce legal controls over commercial devices used in the measurement of cryogenic liquids.  Your expertise is needed to ensure that national and international standards developed for these devices are adequate and suitable for U.S. commercial equipment.
The following documents are available to assist you with your review:

(1) Memorandum – Explanation of the work on the international standard

(2) R 81 “Dynamic Measuring Devices and Systems for Cryogenic Liquids”
            1998-Base Document
            2006-Test Report

(3) Comment Form
