The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is
currently considering a number of changes affecting NGVs. Mr.
Carm Rossi represents the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation (CVEF) on
the gaseous fuels subcommittee (SC 25) of ISO’s Technical Committee 22
on Road Vehicles. Carm chairs Working Group 1 on CNG
connectors. He attended a recent meeting in France and reports
the following:
- ISO 14469-3 has been approved and will soon be published. It
will add a 250 bar (3600 psi) connector in addition to the present
standard (14469-1) for 200 bar (3000 psi) connectors.
- ISO 15500-20, which would allow the use of other than stainless steel
for CNG vehicle fuel lines, is going forward despite U.S. and Japanese
disapprovals. It is being balloted as an FDIS (Final Draft
International Standard).
- ISO 14469-2, which will provide a size 2 connector (a larger
connector for commercial vehicle use, similar to the bus connector
widely used in the U.S.), is being balloted as an FDIS.
- The ECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29)
has adopted ISO 14469-1 as the standard fueling connector for 20 MPa
(200 bar, 3000 psi) service pressure CNG systems.
Carm also noted that that ENGVA (European NGV Association) and IANGV
(International Association for NGVs) are leading new efforts to
harmonize all international NGV standards. For further
